YOU MAY HAVE MISSED...

MedTech Innovations

Back when we were working with large buttoned mobile phone manufacturer emporia, one of the stats that hit me hardest was this: ‘In 1950 there were 14 people in work for every retired person.  By 2050 this ratio will be nearer one in two.’

This is a demographic time bomb and whatever the politics of healthcare, only technology can bridge the gap between demand that will continue to grow faster than funding. So it’s been good to see a couple of fantastic examples of technology transforming healthcare in the news this week.

AI to detect Alzheimer’s

AI’s potential to transform healthcare is extremely exciting.  For example, a new AI tool was announced this week for those facing Alzheimer’s.

Scientists at the University of Cambridge used the AI algorithm to analyse cognitive tests and MRI brain scans, to detect how mental agility issues could progress to Alzheimer’s disease.

The tool’s prediction was more than 80% accurate.

This could allow those at risk of developing Alzheimer’s to get a head start on combatting the condition

Wearable tech making gaming more accessible

Meanwhile, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) has announced a partnership with Meta to revolutionise gaming accessibility for individuals with diverse motor abilities through wearable technology.

Researchers have created sensors that detect electrical signals generated by the muscles in wrists. These signals are then translated into commands, replacing the need for traditional keyboards and joysticks.

One to watch for the future and a great example of a (very rich) internet giant flexing its muscles into new areas.

Future of MedTech

These stories are just two of the reasons why I’m so excited by the potential of MedTech to keep us all healthier and happier in the future.  Getting MedTech devices adopted is incredibly challenging - as we know from our work with gaitQ and Sky Medical Technology - to name but two.  It takes persistence, patience and perseverance - not always attributes closely associated with the technology industry.  The good news is pioneering healthcare professionals are leading the charge for change, which is critical to our future wellbeing!

Fancy a catch up?  If it’s been a while since we last spoke it would be great to catch up again.
